F-JAS® - A WORK ATTRIBUTE DISCOVERY SURVEY SYSTEM

The Fleishman Job Analysis Survey® (F-JAS) is a system for describing jobs and tasks in terms of the abilities, skills, knowledge, and social-interpersonal attributes required. The system is based on Fleishman’s Taxonomy of Human Abilities, Fleishman’s taxonomies of knowledge and social-interpersonal attributes, and SkillsNET’s taxonomy of skills. Essentially, the system is used to identify characteristics of jobs and tasks that are related to the requirements people need to perform these jobs and tasks. Thus, the F-JAS method provides a direct link between job tasks and the characteristics of individuals required to perform these tasks effectively. The assumption is that tasks and jobs differ in the extent to which each selected attribute is required for successful performance of the task or job. Furthermore, individuals differ in the level at which they can perform each attribute. Thus, the F-JAS provides a system through which an individual’s attribute profile can be compared with the requirements of the job. Moreover, the profile required for a job provides the information needed to develop scientifically valid and legally defensible selection, training, and performance evaluation systems.

The F-JAS web tool facilitates the straightforward development of selection, training, and evaluation programs. In other words, the professional can use the attributes identified by the F -JAS to choose or create appropriate measures. For selection, performance evaluation, and promotion, test batteries and assessment procedures can be developed to tap abilities that are required for the job. For training applications, instructional programs can be developed that target the tasks requiring the attributes identified through the analysis. To facilitate promotion from within, instructional programs can be created that target the development of these attributes across a range of jobs. In addition, performance appraisal systems can be developed to evaluate performance on tasks covering the relevant requirements. The attributes identified by the F-JAS can also be used to develop job families with common requirements.

Dr. Fleishman is internationally known for his research on human abilities and the analysis of work requirements.
